The Maestro of Graffiti, Mode 2, Ignites the Swiss Alps with a Spectacular and Powerful Mural in the Heart of Leukerbad

As global heat records continue to rise, Mode 2, the British artist of Mauritian origin based in Berlin, unveils a monumental 200 m² mural at the foot of the glaciers. This vibrant artwork, located on the Sportarena complex, reflects the transformation of mountain regions and current environmental concerns.

Created as part of the Art Valais OPEN AIR MUSEUM, this work marks a significant milestone for the world’s largest open-air urban art museum. Culminating a series of ten murals developed in 2024 by Art Valais, it concludes a pioneering cantonal artistic journey on the theme of water and the release of 40 mini-documentaries detailing each project’s story. This unique museum now offers over 100 large-scale murals to be freely and publicly explored, supported by the mobile app “Art Valais.”

A Dialogue Between Thermal Tradition and Contemporary Urban Art

Set against the dramatic cliffs of the Daubenhorn, this creation, titled “51 Degrees,” bridges the timeless thermal heritage of Leukerbad with pressing environmental issues. The warm tones chosen by the artist evoke both the 51°C of the thermal springs and the rising temperatures shaping the transformation of Alpine regions and lifestyles.

Seven Panels: A Symphony of Movement for a Paradigm Shift

Renowned for his unique figurative style, Mode 2 presents seven dynamic scenes, each celebrating an iconic regional activity: skateboarding, climbing, fitness, cycling, mini-golf, tennis, and camping. Each panel is an ode to movement, inspired by the fluidity of water and the power of Alpine elements. Beneath these illustrations, the composition highlights the village’s adaptation into a family- and sports-oriented destination for new generations and contemporary practices suited to all four seasons.

A Reflection on Humility and Nature

Through his use of scale, the artist underscores the grandeur of the natural environment surrounding Leukerbad. Up close, the figures in the composition appear imposing, yet stepping back reveals their humbling contrast to the towering cliffs above. This subtle interplay invites viewers to reflect on humanity’s place within nature and emphasizes the importance of valuing our surroundings.
