Gemmipass - Sunnbüel
The historic trail from the Gemmi Pass to Sunnbüel is the only one of Switzerland's well-known Alpine crossings that can also be walked in winter.
In the past, muleteers also hauled goods over the snow-covered passes in winter, which are mostly closed at this time of year nowadays. For a few years now, it has been possible to cross the Gemmi from the top of the pass to Sunnbüel again, and it's well worth it.
Whether you start in Kandersteg and finish the hike in Leukerbad at the thermal baths or walk from Leukerbad to Kandersteg is up to you. The crossing of the Gemmi takes an average of 3-4 hours and the trail is wide-tracked. A stop at the Berghotel Schwarenbach is a good idea for a lunch break.
